Whenever a prominent honors show nears, you'll find a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for board games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games globally and have been for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
