EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
